Dong Thap – produce 1 billion fry

According to Dong Thap Agriculture and Rural Development Department, as of September 7, the province’s aquaculture area was 6,428 ha (74.39% of the year’s target), including 1,331 ha of Pangasius, 1,203 ha giant freshwater prawn and 3,894 ha freshwater fishes.

The total aquaculture production hit 297,550 tons (83.45% the year’s target), up over 25% year on year, including 258,162 tons of pangasius.

In 2011, there are 19 Pangasius processing plants in operation presumbly consuming  305,000 tons of locally farmed fish.

Dong Thap currently has 170 aquatic hatcheries and 1,499 households involve in nursing aquatic seed, mostly Pangasius (1,243 households).

Now, the province’s aquatic seed production reaches 1,029 billion individuals including 1,015 billion of pangasius fries, 13.53 million of giant freshwater prawn postlarvae. It is estimated the Pangasius fry and fingerlings production in 2011 would be respectively 1.3-1.5 billion and 25 billion, meeting demand for aquatic seed of the farms in and outside the province.
