Pangasius: Export seafood product with the highest growth rate

This year to date, Pangasius export reached US$1.3 billion, up 29.4% against the same period last year.

In the first nine months of 2011, Viet Nam shipped Pangasius to 134 countries worldwide. Pangasius became the export seafood item with the highest growth rate, ahead of other major products such as shrimp, tuna and mollusk.

EU was the largest importer of Vietnamese Pangasius, with US$397.8 million, up 8.1% year-on-year, accounting for 30.2% of the country’s total Pangasius export value. However, export to Spain, the largest consumer of Vietnamese Pangasius in EU, decreased by 6.8%, while export to Brazil and the US increased by 142% and 100% respectively. Export to other main markets, e.g. Mexico, Australia, China, Hong Kong all increased significantly.

Most of Pangasius export products are frozen fillets and frozen slices coded HS-03. The amount of value-added products is still limited, with US$12 million in value only. It is expected Pangasius export will exceeed US$1.5 billion by the end of the year.
