SEAT at EU-China Science Week, Shanghai Expo 2010, 17th June 2010

The EU-China Science and Technology Week was organized as part of the European Union Pavilion at the World Expo 2010, Shanghai, China.  The event included participation from leading scientists, journalists and representatives of industry, academia and government from the European Union and China.

SEAT at Institute of Aquaculture Research Conference, 5th July 2010

The University of Stirling Institute of Aquaculture (IoA) conference 2010 was aimed at providing an opportunity for academic and industry liaison and discussion on the latest research being carried out at the Institute.  The conference involved researchers from around the globe introducing their work and explaining how it may impact future sustainability within the aquaculture industry.  The conference included a series of oral lectures by students, as well as key-note speeches from Director Brian Austin and Mr Peter Hajipieris, Chief Technical, Sustainability and External Affairs Officer at Birds Eye Iglo.

SEAT at SETAC Europe 2010

The Europe Annual Meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC): Science and Technology for Environmental Protection was held in Seville, Spain, between the 23-27th of May, 2010. The meeting was attended by more than 2500 participants and speakers from governments, industry and academia working in the field of environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, risk assessment and product life cycle assessment.

The European Seafood Exposition is one of the world’s largest seafood fairs, attracting buyers and sellers from over 140 countries around the world and featuring the stands of over 1600 exhibitors.

The fair provides an excellent opportunity to meet with a large number of value chain stakeholders, making contacts for future research and supplementing current knowledge of seafood value chains. The Nordic network on agriculture and food ethics

Nordic networkThe Nordic network on agriculture and food ethics will be hosting a course for PhD students entitled ‘The ethics of fish – Aquaculture in a philosophical perspective’. The course will run from August 16th – 20th 2010 at the Hotel Mabre, Vilnius, Lithuania. The main themes for the event include:

EU-China Partnership 2010

During a scoping trip to China in April 2010 SEAT project members helped promoting the EU-China Partnership 2010 to Chinese seafood exporters. The main objective of the EU-China Partnership is to develop and support business relations between Northern Europe and China. The event is hosted by North Denmark EU-Office in cooperation with China Fishery Technology Promotion Centre and other stakeholders. The aim is to welcome approximately 75 Chinese and 75 European companies to Aalborg, as well as several speakers and representatives from both Europe and China. As a warm-up to the world’s largest seafood industry event European Seafood Exposition PhD Candidate Kaspar Nielsen from Danish Institute for International Studies and member of the SEAT project team had the opportunity to present the project aims to Enterprise Europe Network – The EU-commission’s official business support network. A presentation entitled “Sustainable Ethical Aquaculture Trade – Chinese & Vietnamese products for EU-markets” was given at Enterprise Europe Network’s Martime Sector Group meeting at the Scottish House in Brussels.

SEAT presence at WAS 1-5 March 2010

The World Aquaculture Society’s triennial meeting is the largest international aquaculture conference. This year’s conference in San Diego, USA, had over 4000 attendees from 80+ countries.

A special session was held this year relating to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainability in Aquaculture, hosted by N. Pelletier, P. Tyedmers and J. Colt.
